Columbus Day Weekend on Nantucket

Excited for a great Columbus Day Weekend on Nantucket!

Nantucket’s subtle fall colors

October 12th.  My little brother’s birthday.

Not so little anymore, eh?

But beyond that…..

On to my day on Nantucket Island.  Starting the day with an 8:15 yoga class at The Yoga Room, taught by Caitlin Marcoux, whose classes are currently touching me deeply at all levels…

This weekend is the final Farmer’s Market for 2013.

As I was riding my bike from Sconset into town yesterday and appreciating the subtle colors of Nantucket’s autumn, I ran into a fellow biking friend, Lyle Howland.  As we biked by the Cranberry Bogs, she excitedly reminded me of the Cranberry Festival that is happening today, Saturday, October 12th.  The Conservation Foundation manages the Cranberry Bogs and the related Cranberry Festival.  It starts at 11 am – 4 pm.  It’s free, but you pay $10 for parking.  Things to do for all ages, and you can see cranberries harvested, which is very cool.  Pray for the sky to clear, because when October’s cobalt blue sky is the background for the explosive color in the cranberry bogs, it’s a majestic site….

Tents erected off of Milestone, deep in the Conservation property at the Cranberry Bogs.

This afternoon, the Nantucket SHORTS Festival debuts.  Short Films.  The brainchild of a few videographers and photographers, Kit Noble, Dan Driscoll, and Jeff Tocci.  4 pm.   The Dreamland.  Get your tickets, because it is going to sell out, if it hasn’t already.  (Psst: it’s only $13.50).  I’m excited.  I know Dan Driscoll did a documentary style short on the AudioArchitechs.  There’s so much crazy talent on this island, I can’t wait to see what else will be up on the silver screen….

Everyone will move to Town Restaurant after, and the first drink is on the house for the first 50 in the door to the Nantucket SHORTS Festival!

And this evening I’ll be dining on freshly harvested scallops at Great Harbor Yacht Club.  (I talked to Chef Christopher Brooks yesterday, and due to the island’s low scallop yield this year, he’s taken preventive measures to ensure there will be scallops aplenty….  Nice foresight, Chef!)  If I have the stamina, and prepare properly with a nap, I’ll be dancing to DJ Josh Witty’s House Music at Pazzo (Common Ground Dance Parties, brought to Nantucket Island by the AudioArchitechs…)
