I remember being in a meeting room on the third floor of a hospital in Morristown, NJ. A friend shared and speculated, “I don’t really understand God, but as close as I can figure, it is all about being Kind.” I would expand that to Love. A genuinely Kind person scatters Love.
Yesterday, Nantucket’s Facebook feed was flooded with kind comments about handsome Tommy. Everyone said the same thing about his ready smile and genuine interest. In the last 15 years that I have lived on Nantucket, whenever I saw Tommy, he always stopped, smiled, and asked how I was doing. A Kind man, offering Love.
We were not close, but he took time.
In all honesty, he took more time than I did.
Tommy walked tentatively through the world, gently offering greetings and reaching out. This morning, I woke filled with emotion. Grateful for those in my life. Sad about Tommy. Touched by those I love who are thankfully still with us.
Tommy is a beautiful man who just slipped out of Life. Let’s send him on his way with a prayer and a smile. I hope he knew how people felt about him.
I doubt he did.
